Walking Shield Project Thank You

July 20, 2005

Ms. Dee,

In reference to your quick response despite my late request for assistance, I am so grateful and wanted to say so for providing our certificate of insurance. I think the St. Paul's sisters were more elated than I was.

We provided a Navajo Taco and Mutton Stew experience for the National Guard unit of 42 servicemen who would be leaving shortly for Iraq, and I am sure it's one they will remember. Some even got to make their own fry bread!

We had several Dine' veterans on hand from early wars including two Code Talkers who gave a moving talk on the Code Talkers background along with some traditional education and thought.

We can't forget the hardworking NHA crew who go out there in the hot sun everyday, all of the ones still working on-site were able to attend and join in our dinner. I have to comment on Fabian Glasses' dedication and he has been there the whole time, starting when the Guard first mobilized-- he was their welcoming party that Sunday (7/10).

Finally, Mr. Johnny Martin and Mr. Earl Tulley pulled off a very impromptu presentation of medallions representative of Dine traditional, Code Talker significance that each soldier received. I think this was a nice surprise for them. CIT housing staff gave each a CIT t-shirt which some immediately put on.

Of course at every occasion, there has to a princess. We had Ms. Tia-Ann Long who represents Crownpoint as Little Miss CIT princess and Crownpoint Community School FACE Program (Family and Child Education) princess. She was so cute and openly talked with the soldiers who gave positive comments about her tradtional dress and confidence.

I wanted to share all this with you so you know that the gesture of issuing a certificate of insurance on very, very late notice made all the difference! thanks again.
